An edge proxy usually means one of two things. For most people it is a proxy used in Microsoft Edge, the browser, and the question is where its proxy settings are. Edge has almost none of its own: it follows your computer’s proxy settings, the same ones Chrome uses on Windows. This guide shows every way to set up a proxy in Edge, how to sign in to a paid proxy, how to check it works with our free proxy checker, and how to fix the usual errors. In networking, an edge proxy server is something else: the reverse proxy at the front of a website’s network. That meaning has its own section below.
The short version
To set a proxy in Microsoft Edge, open Settings, choose System and performance, click “Open your computer’s proxy settings”, and enter the proxy host and port under Manual proxy setup in Windows. Edge asks for the proxy username and password the first time it connects. To proxy Edge alone, start it with the –proxy-server switch or use a proxy extension. Edge can’t sign in to a SOCKS5 proxy with a password, so use the HTTP endpoint for paid proxies.
How Microsoft Edge picks a proxy
Four sources, and the highest one winsMicrosoft’s documentation is direct about it: the Edge network stack uses the system network settings by default, and those settings include the proxy. Edge’s own settings page only has a link that opens the Windows or macOS proxy screen. That is why a proxy you set for Edge on Windows also applies to Chrome and to every other app that follows the system proxy.
There are three ways to override the system proxy. Edge is built on Chromium, and Chromium ranks its settings sources in a fixed order: administrator policy first, then extensions, then command-line switches, then the defaults, where the system proxy applies. Microsoft’s policy documentation confirms the top of that list: when the ProxySettings policy is set, Edge ignores all proxy options given on the command line.

v
Microsoft Edge --> proxy (HTTP, HTTPS, SOCKS4 or SOCKS5) --> website
In practice that gives you a simple choice. If you want the whole computer on the proxy, use the system settings. If you want only Edge on the proxy, or only one Edge window, use a command-line switch or an extension. If your work PC is managed, the policy decides and your own settings may be greyed out.
Key takeaways
- Edge has no proxy fields of its own. Its settings link opens the operating system’s proxy screen.
- A system proxy applies to Edge, Chrome and other apps that follow it, not to Edge alone.
- Switches such as –proxy-server and proxy extensions set a proxy for Edge only.
- Edge signs in to HTTP proxies through a sign-in box. It can’t send a password to a SOCKS5 proxy.
- Edge never reads a username and password typed into the system proxy settings.
Proxy types Edge supports
HTTP, HTTPS, SOCKS4 and SOCKS5Microsoft’s “Microsoft Edge Proxy Support” page lists the proxy schemes Edge understands, with their default ports and how each handles sign-in and DNS. The differences matter most for paid proxies, which almost always need a username and password.
| Scheme | Default port | Username and password | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| HTTP | 80 | Yes: Basic, Digest, Negotiate and NTLM | The usual “web proxy”. HTTPS sites go through a CONNECT tunnel, so the page stays encrypted, but the proxy sees the host name. DNS is resolved by the proxy. |
| HTTPS | 443 | Yes, plus client certificates | The link to the proxy itself is encrypted. It can’t be set in the system proxy settings; use a switch, an extension, a policy or a PAC script. |
| SOCKS4 | 1080 | No | DNS is resolved on your computer and only IPv4 targets work. |
| SOCKS5 | 1080 | No, Edge supports no SOCKS5 authentication | DNS is always resolved by the proxy. TCP only; Edge doesn’t relay UDP through it. |
Two more details from the same page are worth knowing. Plain HTTP/1.1 proxies in Edge are limited to 32 connections at once across all sites, while an HTTPS proxy that speaks HTTP/2 gets higher limits. And Edge sends some addresses directly no matter what you configure: localhost, 127.0.0.1 and the link-local ranges always bypass the proxy.
For a proxy with a username and password, use its HTTP endpoint in Edge. SOCKS5 with a password is not supported.
How to set up a proxy in Edge on Windows
Windows 11 and Windows 10On Windows, Edge’s proxy settings are the Windows proxy settings. The steps below use the Settings app; the Windows proxy server management guide covers setup scripts, automatic detection and the command line in more depth.
- Open Edge’s settings. Click the three-dot menu, choose Settings, then System and performance in the left menu. Or type edge://settings/system in the address bar.
- Open the Windows proxy screen. Click Open your computer’s proxy settings. Windows opens Settings at Network & internet > Proxy.
- Start a manual setup. Under Manual proxy setup, next to “Use a proxy server”, select Set up.
- Enter the proxy. Turn on Use a proxy server, type the proxy host in “Proxy IP address” and the port in “Port”. For ProxyEmpire residential or mobile proxies that is v2.proxyempire.io and 5000.
- Set exceptions. Optionally list sites that should skip the proxy, separated by semicolons. Keep “Don’t use the proxy server for local (intranet) addresses” ticked unless you need local names proxied.
- Save. Select Save, go back to Edge and open any website.
- Sign in. Edge shows a box that says the proxy requires a username and password. Enter the proxy username and password from your dashboard.
The Windows dialog has no username or password field, so the sign-in box is expected and normal. If the box keeps returning straight after you sign in, the credentials don’t match; copy them again rather than typing them. Remember that other apps now use the proxy as well. Turn it off in the same screen when you are done.
Edge proxy settings on macOS
System Settings, Network, Details, ProxiesOn a Mac, Edge again hands you to the operating system. Apple’s Mac User Guide gives the path:
- In Edge, open Settings > System and performance > Open your computer’s proxy settings. Or choose Apple menu > System Settings > Network yourself.
- Click the network service you use, such as Wi-Fi, then Details, then Proxies.
- Turn on Web proxy (HTTP) and Secure web proxy (HTTPS), and enter the same host and port in both.
- Add any hosts that should skip the proxy under “Bypass proxy settings for these hosts & domains”, separated by commas, then click OK.
macOS also has a “Proxy server requires password” switch. Microsoft’s documentation says Edge doesn’t use credentials stored in the system proxy settings and signs in through its normal flow instead, so expect Edge’s sign-in box the first time even if you filled in that switch. The setting belongs to one network service: if you move from Wi-Fi to Ethernet, check the proxy there too.
Use a proxy for Edge only: command-line switches
–proxy-server, –proxy-bypass-list and friendsCommand-line switches set the proxy for the Edge process you start and leave the rest of the computer alone. Microsoft documents five of them. The first line below is the one most people need.
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application\msedge.exe" --proxy-server="http://v2.proxyempire.io:5000"
msedge.exe --proxy-server="http://v2.proxyempire.io:5000" --proxy-bypass-list="*.example.com;*.example.org"
msedge.exe --proxy-server="http://proxy2:8080,direct://"
msedge.exe --proxy-pac-url="https://wpad/proxy.pac"
msedge.exe --proxy-auto-detect
msedge.exe --no-proxy-server
- –proxy-server takes one proxy for everything, a per-scheme map such as “http=proxy1:8080;ftp=ftpproxy”, or direct:// for no proxy. Add ,direct:// to fall back to a direct connection if the proxy is down.
- –proxy-bypass-list only works together with –proxy-server. Matching is by trailing text, so “*microsoft.com” also matches “imicrosoft.com”; write “*.microsoft.com” to match subdomains only.
- –proxy-pac-url points Edge at a PAC file, –proxy-auto-detect tries to discover one, and –no-proxy-server turns every proxy off, overriding all other proxy settings.
On a Mac, pass the same switch through the open command: open -a “Microsoft Edge” –args –proxy-server=”http://v2.proxyempire.io:5000″.
Switches only take effect when a new Edge process starts. Chromium’s own instructions say to exit any running instance first, and Edge often keeps running after you close its windows, for example with Startup boost turned on. Close every Edge window, turn off Startup boost under System and performance if Edge stays in the background, then start it with the switch. To make it permanent, add the switch to the end of the Target field in the Edge shortcut’s properties. Edge ignores a username and password written into the proxy URL, so it shows the sign-in box here too.
Proxy extensions in Edge
Edge add-ons, and extensions from the Chrome Web StoreAn extension is the easiest way to switch proxies in Edge without restarting it. Extensions with proxy permission sit above switches and system settings in the order shown in Figure 1, and they can save the proxy login so the sign-in box doesn’t appear. When one takes over, Edge warns that the extension has taken control of your proxy settings and could change, break or eavesdrop on what you do online. That warning is accurate for any proxy extension, so install only ones you trust.
Edge can install extensions from its own Microsoft Edge Add-ons store and from the Chrome Web Store. Microsoft’s help page describes the steps: open the Chrome Web Store in Edge, pick the extension, select the button to add it, choose Allow when Edge asks to allow extensions from other stores, review the permissions and confirm. Our comparison of the best proxy extensions for Chrome covers the main options and which of them can sign in to a proxy.
The same limits apply as in Chrome. Extensions can answer an HTTP proxy’s sign-in request, but no extension can send a password to a SOCKS5 proxy in a Chromium browser. Extensions also stay off in InPrivate windows unless you tick “Allow in InPrivate” for them on the extension’s details page. Our own ProxyEmpire Proxy Manager extension is published on the Chrome Web Store and works in Edge too: turn on “Allow extensions from other stores” on the edge://extensions page, then add it from the Chrome Web Store. The Chrome proxy settings guide shows how to set it up.
Managed PCs: the ProxySettings policy
For IT admins, and for anyone whose settings are greyed outAdministrators set Edge’s proxy with Group Policy, Intune or the registry. The ProxySettings policy bundles the older ProxyMode, ProxyServer, ProxyPacUrl and ProxyBypassList policies into one value and overrides them. Microsoft supports it on Windows and macOS from Edge 77 and on Android, but not on iOS. It applies per profile, and when it is set, users can’t change the proxy and Edge ignores proxy switches on the command line.
{
"ProxyMode": "fixed_servers",
"ProxyServer": "v2.proxyempire.io:5000",
"ProxyBypassList": "https://intranet.example.com"
}
ProxyMode takes five values: direct (never use a proxy), system (use the operating system’s proxy), auto_detect, fixed_servers (use ProxyServer and ProxyBypassList) and pac_script (use ProxyPacUrl, with ProxyPacMandatory to stop a fallback to direct connections when the PAC file fails). There is no field for a username or password, so a paid proxy set by policy still prompts for sign-in. To see what is applied, open edge://policy; Microsoft notes you may need to restart Edge after changing a local policy, or run gpupdate /force for domain policy.
How to check which proxy Edge is using
Settings, policy, net-internals and an IP check- Look at the IP address sites see. Open our proxy checker or any “what is my IP” page in Edge. If it shows the proxy’s IP and location rather than your own, the proxy works. For a rotating proxy, the IP can change between checks.
- Check the Windows proxy screen. Settings > Network & internet > Proxy shows whether a manual proxy or a setup script is on.
- Check edge://policy. If ProxySettings or ProxyServer appears there, an administrator’s policy is in charge and the other settings don’t count.
- Check for an extension. Open edge://extensions and look for a proxy extension that is turned on.
- Use edge://net-internals/#proxy for resets. In current Chromium this page no longer lists your settings. It has two buttons: Re-apply settings, and Clear bad proxies, which makes Edge retry proxies it has marked as failed.
- Capture a log if you need detail. edge://net-export records Edge’s network events, including proxy resolution. Click Start Logging To Disk, reproduce the problem in another tab, then Stop Logging. The default “Strip private information” option keeps the log safer to share.
Fix common Edge proxy errors
What the error codes meanEdge uses Chromium’s network error codes. When the proxy fails, the error page often reads “It looks like there’s something wrong with the proxy server, or the address is incorrect”, and the code underneath tells you which part failed.
| Error or symptom | What it means and what to do |
|---|---|
| ERR_ | Edge couldn’t reach the proxy: the host name didn’t resolve or the connection failed. Check the host and port for typos, check that the proxy isn’t blocked by a firewall, and turn off a proxy you no longer use. |
| ERR_ | The proxy answered but couldn’t open a tunnel to the site. Common causes are a destination the proxy provider blocks, a site on a port the proxy doesn’t allow, or a problem further along the proxy’s route. Try another site to narrow it down. |
| The sign-in box keeps coming back | The username or password doesn’t match. Copy both from the dashboard again, and check for spaces at the ends. |
| SOCKS5 proxy with a password never connects | Edge supports no SOCKS5 authentication. Use the provider’s HTTP endpoint instead, or a desktop app that handles the SOCKS5 login. |
| ERR_ | None of the proxies in the list uses a scheme Edge supports. Check the scheme prefix, for example http:// or socks5://. |
| ERR_ | A mandatory PAC script couldn’t be fetched, parsed or run. The PAC URL is wrong or unreachable; ask your administrator if it was set by policy. |
With ProxyEmpire, two account rules explain most tunnel errors. Only ports 80 and 443 are open by default, which covers ordinary websites, and there is no UDP. Financial, government, bank, payment and crypto sites are blocked on every proxy type; unblocking needs KYC and a use-case review, as described in are there any blocked websites.
To turn the proxy off, undo whichever method you used: switch off “Use a proxy server” in Windows, turn off the Web proxy switches on a Mac, remove the switch from the shortcut, or disable the extension. If nothing else works, starting Edge with –no-proxy-server tells you whether the proxy is the problem at all.
Edge on Android and iPhone
The phone’s network settings decideEdge for Android and iOS has no proxy screen of its own. It follows the proxy configured for the phone’s Wi-Fi network. On managed Android phones an administrator can also push the ProxySettings policy, which Microsoft lists as supported on Android and not on iOS.
- Android. The built-in Wi-Fi proxy has no username or password field, so it can’t sign in to paid proxies. The free ProxyEmpire Proxy Manager app for Android routes Edge, or any app you choose, through HTTP or SOCKS5 proxies with a username and password; see how to set up a proxy on Android.
- iPhone and iPad. Open Settings, tap Wi-Fi, tap the info button next to your network, then Configure Proxy under HTTP Proxy. Choose Manual, enter the server and port, turn on Authentication with your username and password, and tap Save. The proxy applies to that Wi-Fi network only, and to every app using it, not only Edge.
What is an edge proxy server? The networking meaning
The reverse proxy at the front of a networkOutside the browser, “edge proxy” is a networking term, and it has nothing to do with Microsoft Edge. An edge proxy server is a proxy that sits at the edge of a network, where it meets the internet, and handles traffic crossing that boundary. Microsoft’s archived IIS documentation defines it as a proxy positioned on the edge of an intranet that connects to an origin server through the internet, answering requests from its cache, by proxying to the origin, or by redirecting the client.
Today the term mostly means the server-side version: a reverse proxy that receives every incoming request for a website or service before any application server sees it. It terminates TLS, routes each request to the right backend, balances load, caches, and applies limits. Envoy’s documentation calls Envoy “a production-ready edge proxy” and lists settings to harden it for that job, such as buffer limits, connection and stream timeouts, connection limits and rejecting header names with underscores. NGINX does the same work with its proxy_pass directive:
location /some/path/ {
proxy_set_header Host $host;
proxy_set_header X-Real-IP $remote_addr;
proxy_pass http://localhost:8000;
}
CDNs run edge proxies at global scale. Cloudflare’s documentation describes its network as a reverse proxy: when a DNS record is set to proxied, Cloudflare answers with an anycast IP address instead of the origin’s, and the site’s HTTP and HTTPS traffic passes through Cloudflare on its way to the origin server. In the vocabulary of RFC 9110, the HTTP standard, an edge proxy is a gateway, also called a reverse proxy: it acts as the origin server for the client and forwards requests inward. A proxy in the RFC’s sense is the opposite kind, one the client chooses and configures.
| Edge proxy (reverse proxy) | Forward proxy | |
|---|---|---|
| Who sets it up | The website or service owner | The user or their company |
| Who it works for | The servers behind it | The clients using it |
| Whose IP it hides | The origin server’s | The user’s |
| Examples | Envoy, NGINX, HAProxy, CDN edge servers, API gateways | Corporate web proxies, residential and mobile proxy networks |
A proxy you configure in Microsoft Edge is a forward proxy. ProxyEmpire sells forward proxies; it doesn’t offer edge proxy software for your servers. For a full comparison of the two, including where load balancers fit, read forward proxy vs reverse proxy.
Which proxy to use with Microsoft Edge
Match the proxy to the jobProxyEmpire’s rotating residential network has 30M+ IPs in 179 countries and territories, and rotating mobile has 4M+ IPs in 174 countries. Both let you target by country, region, city, ZIP, ISP or carrier, ASN and OS at no extra charge, and both connect through v2.proxyempire.io on port 5000 with a username and password, which is exactly what Edge’s sign-in box asks for. There is no IP whitelisting, so always use the HTTP endpoint in Edge.
For a browser, pick a sticky session in the dashboard so a whole visit keeps one IP. Rotating on every request is the right choice for scrapers, but in a browser a page loads dozens of files and a login or checkout can break when the IP changes halfway. Residential traffic costs $3.50/GB pay-as-you-go and falls to $1.50/GB on larger plans, unused bandwidth rolls over, and datacenter proxies start at $0.35/GB. Support is available 24/7 from real people.
Microsoft Edge proxy FAQ
Short answersDoes Microsoft Edge have its own proxy settings?
No. Edge uses the operating system’s proxy settings by default, and its settings page only links to them. To give Edge a proxy of its own, use a command-line switch, an extension or, on managed PCs, the ProxySettings policy.
Why does Edge keep asking for a proxy username and password?
The proxy needs a login and Edge doesn’t store one from the system settings, so it asks when it first connects. If it asks straight after you sign in, the credentials are wrong.
Can I use a SOCKS5 proxy with a password in Edge?
No. Edge supports SOCKS5 but no SOCKS5 authentication. Use the provider’s HTTP endpoint, which Edge can sign in to, or an app that handles the SOCKS5 login for you.
How do I use a proxy only in Edge, not the whole PC?
Start Edge with –proxy-server=”http://host:port” after closing it fully, or install a proxy extension. Both leave other apps on your normal connection.
What is msedge_proxy.exe?
A small helper that ships with Edge in its application folder. It has nothing to do with network proxies. Chromium has the same helper, chrome_proxy.exe, which web-app shortcuts point to so that Windows shows the site’s icon instead of the browser’s.
Do InPrivate windows use the proxy?
Yes, when the proxy comes from the system settings, a switch or a policy. A proxy extension only works in InPrivate if you allow it there.
How do I set a proxy for Edge in Selenium?
Selenium’s browser options take a proxy capability, and Edge also accepts the –proxy-server switch as an argument. Edge ignores credentials inside the proxy URL, so the proxy login needs another method.
Is an edge proxy the same as a reverse proxy?
In networking, usually yes: an edge proxy is a reverse proxy placed at the edge of a network, in front of the servers it protects. A proxy set in Microsoft Edge is a forward proxy, which works for the user instead.
