Brand Protection Proxies: Find Counterfeits, Phishing and Brand Abuse

Use case ยท Last reviewed 28 September 2026 ยท 12 min read

Brand protection is the work of finding and stopping everyone who uses your brand without permission: counterfeit sellers, unauthorised resellers, lookalike domains, fake social accounts, cloned apps and advertisers bidding on your name. Most of that activity is designed to be hard to see. Sellers show different listings in different countries, phishing sites hide from company networks, and marketplaces limit how fast any one visitor can search. This guide explains the threats worth monitoring, why brand protection teams use proxies, how to set up a monitoring and enforcement workflow, and which proxies fit each job.

The short version

Brand protection runs on continuous monitoring: search marketplaces, search engines, social networks, app stores and new domains for your brand, capture evidence, and file takedowns. Proxies make that monitoring complete. Rotating residential proxies show each market as local buyers see it, mobile proxies reveal what appears in apps, and neither tells the infringer who is looking. ProxyEmpire covers 170+ locations with more than 30 million residential and 4 million mobile IPs.

What Is Brand Protection?

Monitoring, evidence and enforcement

Brand protection combines three activities. Monitoring finds where your trademarks, product images, designs and content appear online. Evidence gathering records each infringement in a form that a marketplace, registrar, platform or court will accept. Enforcement removes it: takedown notices, domain disputes, test purchases and, for serious cases, legal action. In-house teams, law firms and specialist brand protection agencies all follow this pattern; what differs is scale.

The scale is large. The OECD and the EU Intellectual Property Office estimate that trade in counterfeit and pirated goods was worth about USD 467 billion in 2021, up to 2.3% of world trade. Much of it is sold online, through marketplace listings, social media shops and short-lived websites, which is why monitoring has become a continuous, automated job rather than an occasional search.

Brand Protection Threats to Monitor

Where brand abuse happens online
ThreatWhat it looks likeWhere to look
CounterfeitsFake products using your name, logo or imagesMarketplaces, social shops, standalone stores
Unauthorised resellers and grey marketGenuine goods sold outside agreed channels or regionsMarketplaces, cross-border sites
MAP violationsSellers advertising below your minimum advertised priceRetailers, comparison sites
Lookalike domains and phishingTypo domains and copies of your site that collect logins or paymentsNew domain registrations, search results
ImpersonationFake brand or executive profiles, fake support accountsSocial networks, messaging apps
Cloned appsApps using your name or iconApp stores, third-party app sites
Brand bidding and ad abuseAds on your brand terms that lead to rivals or fakesSearch and social ads
PiracyCopies of your software, courses or mediaFile hosts, streaming sites, forums

Few brands face all of these at once. Consumer goods brands usually start with counterfeits and resellers, software and media companies with piracy and cloned apps, and financial and retail brands with phishing and impersonation. Pricing-policy work overlaps with price monitoring, and ad abuse with ad verification; the same proxy setup serves all three.

Why Brand Protection Teams Use Proxies

See what buyers see, without being seen
  • Local visibility. Counterfeiters often target specific countries and hide listings from others; marketplaces and search engines localise results. Checking from each market, down to the city, shows the listings local buyers actually get.
  • Staying unnoticed. Infringers watch for visits from brand owners and their agencies. Phishing kits commonly block known corporate and security networks and show a harmless page instead. A residential IP looks like any other shopper, so you see the real page.
  • Scale. Monitoring thousands of search terms across dozens of marketplaces every day runs straight into per-IP rate limits. Rotation across a large pool spreads that volume so each IP makes only a few requests.
  • Mobile channels. Social shops, messaging sellers and cloned apps live on phones. Mobile carrier IPs show you the app and mobile web experience as users see it.
  • Test purchases. Buying a suspected fake for examination works best from a normal consumer connection in the seller’s target market; a sticky session keeps the whole checkout on one IP.

Key takeaways

  • Brand protection is monitoring, evidence gathering and enforcement, run continuously.
  • Counterfeiters localise and hide listings, so check each market from a local IP.
  • Residential proxies show the real page without revealing who is looking; mobile proxies cover apps.
  • Capture evidence with timestamp, URL and location before you file a takedown.

Best Proxies for Brand Protection

Targeting is included at no extra charge on residential and mobile proxies: country, region, city, ZIP, ISP and ASN. There is no limit on concurrent sessions, so a monitoring job can check every marketplace in every market in parallel, and unused bandwidth rolls over when a quiet month is followed by a busy launch. Investigators working across many accounts can pair sticky sessions with the anti-detect browsers that integrate with ProxyEmpire, one profile and one IP per identity.

A Brand Protection Monitoring Workflow

Six steps that scale from one brand to a portfolio
  1. Define what to protect. List trademarks, product names, logos, key product images, domains, official social accounts and authorised sellers. The authorised list is what everything else is compared against.
  2. Build search queries. Combine brand names with product terms, common misspellings, “replica” and “wholesale” style keywords, and the local-language versions for each market.
  3. Choose sources and markets. Pick the marketplaces, search engines, social networks and app stores that matter for each country, and set the proxy location to match.
  4. Collect on a schedule. Run searches daily or more often for high-risk products, and weekly for the long tail. Save each listing’s title, price, seller, images, URL and the location it was seen from.
  5. Triage. Filter out authorised sellers, then rank the rest by risk: price far below retail, copied product photos, seller history, volume. Image matching helps spot copied photos at scale.
  6. Enforce and re-check. File takedowns for confirmed infringements and re-check each listing later. Repeat offenders often reappear under new names, so track sellers, not just listings.

Much of the collection step is standard web scraping: search result pages, listing pages and seller profiles. Our guides to web scraping basics and Python web scraping with proxies cover rotation, retries and parsing. For search engines specifically, proxies for SEO explains localised results.

In-house, agency or both

Brand protection software and agencies bundle monitoring, image matching, case management and takedown filing, which suits brands that want results without a technical team. In-house monitoring gives full control over which markets, sites and search terms are covered, and the cost per check falls as volume grows; it needs developers to build and maintain the collectors. Many brands mix the two: an agency for bulk marketplace enforcement, and their own scripts for the niche sites, local-language markets or apps the agency does not cover. Agencies themselves run on the same infrastructure, and many use ProxyEmpire to monitor portfolios of client brands across dozens of countries from one account, with sub-users to separate traffic and usage per client.

How much traffic brand monitoring uses

Residential and mobile proxies are billed per GB, so plan the volume before you choose a plan. As a rough guide, 50 search queries on five marketplaces in ten countries is 2,500 searches a day; reading about ten result and listing pages for each makes 25,000 page loads a day, or 750,000 a month. At 200 KB per page that is around 150 GB; saving only the listing data you need, and skipping images except for flagged listings, can cut it to a fraction of that. Keep screenshots for confirmed cases rather than every result. For very large portfolios, unlimited residential proxies remove the per-GB meter, and current rates are on the pricing page.

Evidence Collection and Takedowns

Make every report hard to reject

A takedown is only as strong as its evidence. For each infringement, capture a full-page screenshot, the URL, the date and time, the seller’s details, the price, and the country and city the page was viewed from. Save the page HTML as well, because listings are edited or deleted as soon as sellers notice attention. Recording the proxy location with each capture shows that the listing was visible to buyers in that market, which matters when rights are registered country by country.

Enforcement routes depend on the channel:

  • Marketplaces and social platforms run their own intellectual property reporting programmes. Registered brand owners and their agents can usually report listings in bulk.
  • Copyright infringement, such as copied photos, software or media, can be reported to hosts with notices under laws like the US Digital Millennium Copyright Act.
  • Domain names that copy a trademark can be challenged through the Uniform Domain-Name Dispute-Resolution Policy (UDRP), administered by providers such as the WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center, or reported to the registrar and host when used for phishing.
  • Serious or repeated counterfeiting may justify test purchases, customs recordation and legal action, led by your IP counsel.

Brand protection teams collect publicly visible listings and pages to enforce their own rights; keep it that way, and ProxyEmpire is not for spam or illegal activity. ProxyEmpire’s support team is available 24/7, staffed by real people, if you need help sizing a monitoring setup across many markets.

To see listings and pages as buyers in each market see them, to avoid revealing the brand owner to infringers, and to run thousands of daily checks without hitting per-IP limits.

Which proxies are best for brand protection?

Rotating residential proxies for marketplaces, search and phishing checks; mobile proxies for social, messaging and app stores; sticky sessions or ISP proxies for test purchases.

Can I monitor counterfeit listings in specific countries?

Yes. ProxyEmpire’s residential and mobile proxies target 170+ locations by country, region, city, ZIP, ISP and ASN at no extra charge.

How do I report a counterfeit listing?

Use the marketplace’s intellectual property reporting tool with your trademark registration and evidence: screenshots, URL, date, seller and location.

How can I take down a lookalike domain?

Report phishing to the registrar and host, and challenge trademark-infringing domains through the UDRP process.

Is brand monitoring legal?

Monitoring publicly visible listings and pages to protect your own rights is standard practice. Site terms and privacy laws still apply, so collect only what you need as evidence.
