A Shopify proxy is a proxy server you put between your browser or tool and Shopify-hosted stores, so each store sees the proxy’s IP address and location instead of yours. Merchants and agencies use one to see their own and competitors’ storefronts as buyers in other countries do, with local prices and currencies, to monitor prices and stock across many Shopify stores, to find counterfeit or unauthorised stores, and to test the geo features of apps and themes. To find the best Shopify proxies in 2026 we compared 13 providers on proxy types, location targeting, sessions and price. For product and price data at scale, see ProxyEmpire’s e-commerce scraping proxies.

Shopify proxy vs Shopify app proxy
Two different things with similar namesThis guide is about proxy servers, which change the IP and location Shopify stores see. A Shopify app proxy is a feature for app developers, and it doesn’t change anyone’s IP address.
Shopify’s developer docs describe it simply: app proxies take requests to Shopify URLs and forward them to your app, so a storefront can show data from an outside source. A path such as /apps/store-locator on the store’s own domain loads content from the app’s server. The first part of the path must be apps, a, community or tools, and each app can have one proxy route.
- Benefits: the content sits on the store’s own domain, and Shopify adds the
shopandlogged_in_customer_idparameters so the app knows which store and customer it is serving. If the app returns Liquid, Shopify renders it inside the store’s theme. - Security: the app should authenticate every proxied request (Shopify’s React Router template does this for you), and Shopify strips headers such as
CookieandSet-Cookiefrom app proxy responses. - Performance: every request is forwarded to your app, so its speed depends on your app’s server.
| Proxy server (this guide) | Shopify app proxy | |
|---|---|---|
| Who uses it | Merchants, agencies, analysts | Shopify app developers |
| What it changes | The IP and location stores see | Where a storefront path loads content from |
| Set up in | Your browser, tool or script | The app’s configuration file |
| Used for | Market checks, monitoring, brand protection | Store locators, reviews, custom pages |
Which proxy type for each Shopify job
Match the IP to the taskA “Shopify residential IP” simply means a residential proxy used with Shopify stores: an IP from a home internet provider, so the store sees an ordinary shopper rather than a server. It is the right default for most jobs:
| Shopify job | Best proxy type | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Local prices, currencies and markets | Rotating residential | A home IP in each buyer’s country shows that market’s storefront |
| Price and assortment monitoring | Rotating residential | A new IP per request spreads checks across many stores |
| Brand protection | Rotating residential or mobile | Find counterfeit or unauthorised stores as local buyers see them |
| Testing app and theme geo features | Sticky residential session | One IP per test country for the whole visit, cart included |
| Staff working from abroad | Static residential (ISP) | The same residential IP at every sign-in |
| Datacenter | Cheap tests only | Fast, but server IPs look less like ordinary shoppers |
At ProxyEmpire, rotating residential proxies cost $3.50 → $1.50/GB, rotating mobile proxies $4.50 → $2.00/GB (currently 50% off list), and static residential proxies $3.50 → $2.00 per IP a month. See ISP vs residential proxies for the trade-offs.
Checking Shopify stores by country, and at scale
Markets, monitoring and Shopify’s bot limitsShopify lets a store sell in local currencies and set prices by country or region. With automatic redirection switched on, Shopify detects a visitor’s location and shows the storefront of their market, with its currency and language. So from your office you only see your own market. Through a residential IP in another country, you see what buyers there see.
- Check each market as a local buyer. Pick a proxy in the target country, then compare the price, currency, shipping options and language with what you expect. Do the same for competitors.
- Monitor many stores on a schedule. Rotate residential IPs and track prices and stock over time. Our price monitoring guide covers the workflow.
- Go at a steady pace. Shopify’s developer docs say buyer traffic on the Storefront API isn’t rate-limited, but bots and crawlers are, most strictly when their requests are unsigned. A request that looks malicious gets a 430 Shopify Security Rejection error. Spread requests out and back off when you see errors.
- Crawling your own store? Shopify lets bot operators sign requests with Web Bot Auth for higher limits, and merchants can find ready-to-use signatures in the Shopify admin. Developers can also query their store’s localized prices with the Storefront API’s
@inContext(country: ...)directive. - Find counterfeit stores. Search and open suspect stores from the countries where they sell, and save URLs and screenshots as evidence. See our brand protection proxies.
- Give staff their own access. Shopify offers staff accounts with roles and permissions, and collaborator accounts for partners and agencies, which don’t count toward the store’s user limit. A proxy only changes the IP.
Free Shopify proxies: are they worth it?
Why we don’t publish a listFree Shopify proxies are public proxy lists and web proxy sites. They are shared by thousands of people, mostly run on datacenter IPs, and are run by strangers who can see what you send through them, including a store admin login. That is why we don’t publish a list: it would be out of date within days. Never sign in to a Shopify admin through one. For a real test, ProxyEmpire’s $1.97 trial gives you private residential and mobile IPs, and Decodo, Byteful and Webshare offer free trials or plans. Shopify’s terms, each store’s terms and your local laws apply whichever proxy you use.
Shopify proxy FAQ
Short answersWhat is the best Shopify proxy?
ProxyEmpire, in our 2026 comparison: residential, mobile and static IPs in one account, city, ZIP and ISP targeting included, and a $1.97 trial.
What is a Shopify residential IP?
A residential proxy used with Shopify stores. The IP belongs to a home internet provider, so a store sees an ordinary shopper in the country you choose.
What is a Shopify app proxy?
A developer feature that forwards requests for a storefront path, such as /apps/your-app, to an app’s server so the store can show the app’s content. It doesn’t change your IP address.
How do I see my Shopify store as buyers in another country do?
Connect through a residential proxy in that country and open the store. With automatic redirection on, Shopify shows the storefront, currency and language of that visitor’s market.
Which proxy type is best for Shopify?
Rotating residential for market checks and monitoring, a sticky residential session for testing a full visit, and static residential (ISP) IPs for staff who need one steady IP.
Can I monitor competitors’ Shopify prices with proxies?
Yes. Rotating residential proxies spread checks across many stores and countries. Keep request rates steady, since Shopify limits bots and crawlers, most strictly when requests are unsigned.
Why does a Shopify store return a 430 error?
Shopify’s docs say it returns a 430 Shopify Security Rejection when a request looks malicious. Slow down, rotate residential IPs and back off before retrying.
Are datacenter proxies good for Shopify?
Only for cheap tests. They are fast, but server IP ranges look less like ordinary shoppers than residential or mobile IPs.
Can I use Shopify proxies for limited drops?
We don’t cover checkout bots. Shopify’s bot protection exists to block bots at checkout so real customers get a fair chance at scarce products; this guide is about research and monitoring.
How much do Shopify proxies cost?
ProxyEmpire residential costs $3.50 → $1.50/GB. Across the 13 providers here, rates at 1 TB or less run from $1.00/GB flat (country targeting only) to $3.36/GB.
Can I use a Shopify proxy on my phone?
Yes. On Android, ProxyEmpire’s free Proxy Manager app routes your browser or apps through the proxy (see the Android proxy guide); on iPhone, use our iPhone proxy guide.
