A WiFi proxy is the proxy option inside the settings of a Wi-Fi network on your phone, tablet or laptop. When it is on, the web traffic you send over that network goes to a proxy server first, and websites see the proxy’s IP address instead of yours. This guide explains what the setting does, what Off, Manual and Automatic mean, how to set it on iPhone, iPad, Android, Windows 11 and macOS, whether it should be off, and how to use a residential proxy on Wi-Fi without breaking your connection.
The short version
The proxy setting in your Wi-Fi options tells the device to send that network’s web traffic through a proxy server. Leave it Off unless your school, workplace or proxy provider gave you details to enter. Manual means you type a server and port, and Automatic means the device loads a proxy auto-config (PAC) file from a URL or discovers one on the network. On iPhone and Android the setting belongs to one Wi-Fi network only, so other networks and mobile data stay direct.
What Is a WiFi Proxy?
A per-network setting that points your traffic at a proxy serverA proxy server is a computer that makes web requests on your behalf. Your device sends the request to the proxy, the proxy forwards it to the website, and the answer comes back the same way. The website only sees the proxy’s address. Google’s Pixel help describes a proxy as being like a gate or tunnel between devices, and gives a typical example: connecting to your work network from home.
The “proxy” option you find in Wi-Fi settings is not a proxy itself. It is a pointer that tells the device which proxy to use, if any, while it is connected to that particular network. That is why people search for “proxy settings for Wi-Fi” rather than a product: they have found the option, often on a phone, and want to know what it does and whether to touch it.
Three things about the setting matter more than anything else:
- It is stored per network on phones. On iPhone, iPad and Android, the proxy is saved with one Wi-Fi network. Join a different network, or switch to mobile data, and the device connects directly again.
- It is a request, not a rule. Browsers and apps that use the system’s networking follow it. Apps with their own networking code can ignore it. Android says so on the setting’s own screen: the HTTP proxy is used by the browser but may not be used by other apps.
- It carries web traffic. The built-in setting is for HTTP proxies, which also carry HTTPS pages through an encrypted tunnel. It does not route every kind of traffic, and it does not encrypt anything by itself.
Key takeaways
- A WiFi proxy setting sends one network’s web traffic through a proxy server you choose.
- Off is the right choice on almost every home and public network.
- Manual takes a server and port; Automatic takes a PAC file URL or discovers one (WPAD).
- iPhone and macOS have fields for a proxy username and password; Android and Windows don’t.
- A proxy changes the IP websites see. It is not a VPN and doesn’t encrypt your connection.
Off, Manual and Automatic: What Each Option Means
Three modes, similar on every platformEvery operating system offers the same three choices, under slightly different names. iPhone calls them Off, Manual and Automatic. Android calls them None, Manual and Proxy Auto-Config. Windows and macOS spread them over separate switches.
| Mode | What you enter | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Off / None | Nothing. The device connects to websites directly. | Home Wi-Fi, public Wi-Fi, and any network that didn’t give you proxy details. |
| Manual | A proxy server (host name or IP address) and a port, plus a username and password where the platform supports it. | You have a proxy from a provider or your organisation and want all web traffic on this network to use it. |
| Automatic (PAC) | The URL of a proxy auto-config file. | Your organisation publishes a PAC file that decides which sites go through which proxy. |
| Auto-detect (WPAD) | Nothing. The device asks the network where its PAC file is. | Company networks that are set up for it. Leave it off elsewhere. |
What a PAC file is
A proxy auto-config file is a small JavaScript file with one function, FindProxyForURL(url, host). MDN describes it as a function that decides whether each browser request goes directly to the destination or through a web proxy. It returns DIRECT, a PROXY host:port entry, or a list to try in order. Organisations use PAC files to send only external sites through the proxy while intranet pages stay direct.
function FindProxyForURL(url, host) {
// plain host names and the company domain go direct
if (isPlainHostName(host) || dnsDomainIs(host, ".corp.example")) {
return "DIRECT";
}
// everything else uses the proxy, and falls back to direct if it is down
return "PROXY proxy.corp.example:8080; DIRECT";
}
What WPAD is
Web Proxy Auto-Discovery (WPAD) is how a device finds a PAC file without being told the URL. Apple’s deployment documentation describes the mechanism: with the URL left empty, the device requests a wpad.dat file using DHCP (option 252) or DNS (a host named WPAD). Microsoft notes that WPAD never went beyond an IETF Internet-Draft, which expired, yet browsers and Windows still support it. It is convenient on a managed network and a risk on others: CISA advises considering disabling automatic proxy discovery in browsers and operating systems unless they are only used on internal networks.
Proxy Settings for Wi-Fi on iPhone and iPad
Settings, Wi-Fi, the info button, Configure ProxyApple’s iPhone User Guide puts the proxy with the other settings of the network you are connected to. The steps are the same on iPad.
- Open the network’s settingsGo to the Settings app, tap Wi-Fi, then tap the info button (i) next to the network you are connected to.
- Open the proxy screenScroll to the bottom and tap Configure Proxy under HTTP Proxy.
- Choose a modeTap Off, Manual or Automatic.
- Manual: enter the detailsType the Server and Port. If the proxy needs a login, turn on Authentication and enter the Username and Password.
- Automatic: enter the PAC URLPaste the URL of the PAC file your organisation gave you.
- SaveTap Save in the top-right corner, then open Safari to test.
To turn it off again, go back to the same screen, choose Off and tap Save. If you forget the network and rejoin it, its saved settings, including the proxy, start from scratch.
iOS has no proxy setting for mobile data and no system-wide proxy for ordinary users. A proxy that covers every network is available only through device management: Apple’s Global HTTP Proxy payload applies one proxy to all HTTP traffic on devices enrolled in a device management service. For a step-by-step guide with ProxyEmpire details, see how to set up a proxy on an iPhone.
Two iPhone options sit on the same screen and are often confused with a proxy. Private Wi-Fi Address changes the hardware address your phone shows to the Wi-Fi network, to reduce tracking across networks. Limit IP Address Tracking hides your IP address from known trackers. Neither routes your traffic through a server of your choice.
Android Wi-Fi Proxy Settings: Pixel and Samsung
Same idea, different menu namesEvery Android phone keeps the proxy inside the advanced options of one saved Wi-Fi network. The menu labels change between manufacturers and Android versions, so here are the two most common.
Google Pixel and stock Android
These are the steps in Google’s Pixel Phone Help:
- Open Internet settingsOpen the Settings app and tap Network & internet, then Internet.
- Edit the networkTap the network, then tap Edit and open Advanced options.
- Pick the proxy typeUnder Proxy, tap the down arrow and choose None, Manual or Proxy Auto-Config.
- Enter the settingsFor Manual, fill in Proxy hostname, Proxy port and, optionally, Bypass proxy for. For Proxy Auto-Config, enter the PAC URL.
- SaveTap Save.
Samsung Galaxy (One UI)
- Open Wi-FiOpen Settings, tap Connections, then Wi-Fi.
- Open the network’s settingsTap the gear icon next to the network you are connected to.
- Show the advanced optionsTap View more. On older One UI versions this is called Advanced.
- Set the proxySet Proxy to Manual and enter the host name and port, or choose the auto-config option and enter the PAC URL.
- SaveTap Save.
Samsung’s own support pages list IP and Proxy settings among a Wi-Fi network’s advanced options. On Xiaomi, OnePlus, Motorola and other brands the path is similar: the proxy is always inside one network’s settings.
Proxy Manual
Proxy hostname v2.proxyempire.io (grey hint: proxy.example.com)
Proxy port 5000 (grey hint: 8080)
Bypass proxy for optional, comma-separated, e.g. localhost
Username -- no field --
Password -- no field --
The missing username and password fields are the catch. Android’s manual proxy takes a host, a port and a bypass list, nothing else. Chrome can show a sign-in box when the proxy asks for credentials, but most other apps simply fail to connect. Android’s developer documentation explains the wider limit: the system proxy is built into Java’s networking and Apache’s HTTP client, and other network stacks have to read it themselves. For the full walk-through, see how to set up a proxy on an Android device.
Wi-Fi Proxy Settings on Windows 11
Settings, Network & internet, ProxyWindows works differently from phones: it keeps one proxy configuration for your network connections instead of one per Wi-Fi network. VPN connections can have their own proxy, which Microsoft documents separately. Microsoft’s support article for Windows 10 and 11 gives these steps.
- Open the proxy pageOpen Settings, select Network & internet, then Proxy.
- Automatic detectionUnder Automatic proxy setup, Automatically detect settings turns WPAD on or off.
- Setup scriptNext to Use setup script, select Set up, turn it on, enter the PAC file address and select Save.
- Manual proxyUnder Manual proxy setup, next to Use a proxy server, select Set up. Turn on Use a proxy server and enter the address and port.
- ExceptionsAdd sites that should skip the proxy, separated by semicolons, for example
*.contoso.com; *.adatum.com, and tick Don’t use the proxy server for local (intranet) addresses. - SaveSelect Save.
The Windows dialog has no username or password field. Browsers that follow the system proxy, such as Edge and Chrome, ask for the credentials when the proxy first requests them. If you only need a proxy in the browser, a browser extension is simpler and leaves the rest of Windows alone. ProxyEmpire’s free ProxyEmpire Proxy Manager extension for Chrome stores the login and switches the proxy on and off in one click.
Proxy Settings on a Mac
System Settings, Network, Details, ProxiesmacOS stores proxies with a network service, such as Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Apple’s Mac User Guide gives the path and the options.
- Open Network settingsChoose Apple menu, then System Settings, and click Network in the sidebar.
- Open the service’s detailsClick the network service, such as Wi-Fi, click Details, then click Proxies.
- Pick the proxy typeTurn on Web proxy (HTTP) and Secure web proxy (HTTPS) for a normal HTTP proxy, or SOCKS proxy if that is what you have.
- Enter the serverEnter the server address and port. If needed, turn on “Proxy server requires password” and enter your user name and password.
- SaveClick OK.
The same Proxies screen holds Auto proxy discovery (WPAD) and Automatic proxy configuration (a PAC file URL), plus “Exclude simple hostnames” and a “Bypass proxy settings for these hosts & domains” list for addresses that should skip the proxy.
| Platform | Where it lives | Applies to | Login fields | Automatic options |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone, iPad | Settings, Wi-Fi, (i), Configure Proxy | One Wi-Fi network | Yes (Authentication) | PAC URL |
| Android | Wi-Fi network, Advanced options, Proxy | One Wi-Fi network | No | PAC URL |
| Windows 11 | Settings, Network & internet, Proxy | Your network connections | No | Setup script, auto-detect (WPAD) |
| macOS | System Settings, Network, Details, Proxies | One network service | Yes | PAC URL, auto discovery (WPAD) |
Should the Wi-Fi Proxy Be Off?
Yes, unless your network or you need oneFor almost everyone, yes. A phone or laptop on home Wi-Fi, a café hotspot or a hotel network doesn’t need a proxy to reach the internet, and the default on every platform is off. Turning it on without real details breaks the connection instead of protecting it.
Leave it on, or set it, in three cases:
- Your organisation told you to. Schools and companies often require a proxy, usually with Automatic and a PAC URL. Use exactly what the IT team gave you.
- You use a proxy on purpose. For example, to check how a website, price or ad looks from another country, or to test a mobile page from a residential or mobile IP.
- A tool asks for it. Developers point a phone’s Wi-Fi proxy at a debugging proxy on their computer to inspect an app’s traffic.
If you didn’t set a proxy and one is there, don’t ignore it. Change it back to Off, and if it returns, check whether the device is managed by an employer or school. On a personal device, an unexpected proxy can come from a configuration profile or an app, and it can send your browsing through a server you don’t control.
A proxy you didn’t set is a problem, not a feature. On a personal device, Off is the right default.
Using a ProxyEmpire Proxy on a Wi-Fi Network
Host, port, username and passwordIf you want websites to see a residential or mobile IP from a chosen country while you browse on Wi-Fi, a WiFi proxy is the quickest built-in way. ProxyEmpire uses username and password authentication, with no IP whitelisting, and one gateway for residential and mobile proxies:
Server / host v2.proxyempire.io
Port 5000
Username your proxy username from the dashboard
Password your proxy password from the dashboard
- Build the connectionIn the ProxyEmpire dashboard, pick rotating residential or rotating mobile, then the country and, if you need them, the region, city or ISP. Targeting is included at no extra charge.
- Choose a sticky sessionFor browsing, keep the same IP while you use a site. A new IP for every request can log you out or empty a cart.
- Copy the detailsCopy the host, port, username and password. The username changes when you change targeting, so copy it again after every change.
- Enter them on the deviceUse the steps for your platform above. On iPhone, iPad and Mac, fill in the login fields. On Android and Windows, type the login into the browser’s sign-in box when it appears.
- Check your IPSearch “what is my IP” in the browser. The location should match the country you picked.
Rotating residential proxies come from 30M+ residential IPs in 179 countries and territories. Rotating mobile proxies use 4M+ mobile IPs in 174 countries, with carrier targeting, which suits checking mobile pages and apps as a phone user would see them. Both products have sticky sessions. Most exit IPs are IPv4, with some IPv6.
Know the limits before you rely on it. ProxyEmpire carries TCP traffic over HTTP, HTTPS and SOCKS5; there is no UDP, so voice calls and many games won’t go through. Only ports 80 and 443 are open by default. Banking, payment, government and crypto sites are blocked on every proxy type. Unblocking them needs KYC and a use-case review; see which websites are blocked.
The ProxyEmpire Proxy Manager App for Android
A proxy that follows you off Wi-FiAndroid’s Wi-Fi proxy has no login fields, many apps skip it, and it stops working as soon as you leave that network. ProxyEmpire’s free Android app, ProxyEmpire Proxy Manager on Google Play, fixes all three.
- Login stored once. Tap +, choose Connect to ProxyEmpire and enter your proxy username and password. The app creates profiles already set to v2.proxyempire.io and port 5000.
- Every app, or only some. The app uses Android’s VPN service to route traffic through the proxy, so apps can’t skip it. Route every app, or only the ones you choose, and keep banking and personal apps on your normal connection.
- Wi-Fi and mobile data. The proxy stays on when the phone switches networks.
- Targeting and sessions. Choose a country, then a region, city or ISP, and switch on a sticky session to keep one IP.
- No root. Android asks once for permission to set up a VPN connection; that’s how it asks for any app that uses the VPN service.
It also takes manual HTTP or SOCKS5 profiles for other proxies. On a laptop, the Chrome extension does the same job for the browser. The app and the extension share your account’s balance.
Network-Wide and Transparent Proxies on Wi-Fi
When the proxy lives in the network, not the deviceSometimes the proxy isn’t in your device settings at all. There are two ways a whole Wi-Fi network can use one:
- The network hands out a PAC file. With WPAD, a device set to automatic detection asks the network, through DHCP or DNS, where its proxy configuration is. Company networks use this to configure every laptop at once.
- The network intercepts traffic. A transparent proxy sits on the router or gateway and handles traffic without any setting on your device. HTTP’s specification, RFC 9110, calls it an interception proxy and notes that such proxies are common on public network access points, to make you sign up or accept terms before you get online, and in company firewalls to enforce usage rules.
That second case is why hotel and airport Wi-Fi often shows a login page before anything works. It also means the network operator can see which sites you connect to. HTTPS still protects what’s on the page: a browser reaches an HTTPS site through a proxy with a CONNECT tunnel, and RFC 9110 describes the proxy’s role inside that tunnel as blind forwarding of data. The proxy sees the site’s name, not the content.
Most home routers have no option to send the whole network through an upstream proxy. Doing that usually takes custom router firmware or a separate gateway, and it only suits a network you control. For one person, setting the proxy on the device, or using an app or extension, is simpler and easier to undo. For the general meaning of these options, see our guide to what proxy settings mean.
Troubleshooting a Wi-Fi Proxy
Common symptoms and what fixes them| Symptom | Likely cause and fix |
|---|---|
| No internet on one Wi-Fi network, but mobile data works | A proxy is set on that network and isn’t reachable. Set it to Off or None and reconnect. |
| “Proxy server isn’t responding” | Wrong host or port, or the proxy is down. Check every character; one wrong digit in the port breaks every page. |
| Repeated sign-in prompts or error 407 | The username or password is wrong, or the username changed after you changed targeting. Copy both again from the dashboard, without trailing spaces. |
| Browser works, apps don’t | Those apps ignore the system proxy or can’t show a login prompt. On Android, use the Proxy Manager app. |
| Worked, then stopped | You moved to another Wi-Fi network or to mobile data, where the proxy isn’t set, or the sticky IP went offline. Start a new session. |
| Hotel or airport login page won’t appear | The proxy is intercepting the sign-in page. Turn the proxy off, sign in to the Wi-Fi, then turn it back on. |
| Automatic mode loads nothing | The PAC URL is wrong or unreachable. Open the URL in a browser to check it downloads, or ask your IT team. |
| Bank or payment site won’t open | Financial, payment, government and crypto sites are blocked on ProxyEmpire proxies. Turn the proxy off for them. |
| Pages are slow | The proxy location is far from you or from the site. Choose a closer country or city. |
In Chrome, an unreachable proxy shows up as ERR_PROXY_CONNECTION_FAILED. A wrong login makes the proxy answer 407 Proxy Authentication Required, which browsers show as a sign-in box that keeps coming back. For what each status code means through a proxy, including 502 Bad Gateway, see our proxy error codes guide.
WiFi Proxy FAQ
Short answersWhat does proxy mean in Wi-Fi settings?
It is the option that tells your device whether to send that network’s web traffic through a proxy server, and which one. Off means a direct connection.
Should the proxy on my Wi-Fi be on or off?
Off, unless your school, workplace or proxy provider gave you settings to enter. A proxy without valid details stops pages from loading.
What is proxy.example.com in Wi-Fi settings?
It is the grey placeholder text in Android’s Proxy hostname field, showing the format expected. It isn’t a real server. The port field shows 8080 the same way.
What is the difference between Manual and Automatic?
Manual uses one server and port you type in. Automatic loads a PAC file, from a URL you enter or one the network advertises, that picks a proxy for each site.
Is a WiFi proxy the same as a VPN?
No. A proxy changes the IP address websites see for web traffic that uses it. A VPN encrypts all traffic between your device and the VPN server. A proxy doesn’t add encryption, though HTTPS sites stay encrypted.
Does a Wi-Fi proxy work on mobile data?
No. On phones it belongs to one Wi-Fi network. For a proxy on mobile data, use an app such as ProxyEmpire Proxy Manager on Android.
Can I use a SOCKS5 proxy in Wi-Fi settings?
Not on iPhone or Android, whose Wi-Fi setting is for HTTP proxies. macOS has a SOCKS proxy option, and apps or extensions can use SOCKS5.
Is it safe to use a proxy on public Wi-Fi?
A trusted proxy is fine, and HTTPS keeps page content encrypted. A proxy is not a security tool, though, and a proxy you didn’t set yourself should be turned off.
