What Are Mobile Proxies? How 4G and 5G Proxies Work, and When to Use Them

Complete guide ยท Last reviewed 28 September 2026 ยท 14 min read

Mobile proxies route your traffic through real 4G and 5G connections from mobile carriers, so websites and apps see you as an ordinary phone user on a local network. Because carriers share each public IP address among many subscribers, mobile IPs are among the most trusted on the internet. This guide explains how they work, how they compare with residential and datacenter proxies, the difference between rotating and dedicated options, what they are used for, and how to set one up. For ProxyEmpire’s plans, see our mobile proxies.

The short version

A mobile proxy is a proxy whose exit IP belongs to a mobile carrier’s 3G, 4G, 5G or LTE network, the same kind of address a smartphone gets. Choose a rotating pool, billed per GB, for data collection, ad checks and app testing across many locations and carriers. Choose a dedicated connection, billed monthly, when you need one private mobile connection for long sessions.

What Are Mobile Proxies?

A phone’s IP address, for your tools

A proxy relays your requests and gives the website its own IP address instead of yours. Here, that IP address belongs to a mobile network operator: the request leaves the internet through a SIM-connected device on a carrier network, just as it would from someone’s phone.

That matters because websites judge visitors by where their IP comes from. Data-center addresses belong to hosting companies and are easy to identify. Residential addresses belong to home internet providers. Mobile addresses belong to carriers such as the national 4G and 5G operators in each country, and they are shared, constantly reassigned and used by millions of real people.

To a website, a mobile proxy looks like one more person browsing on their phone.

How Mobile Proxies Work

From your script to a carrier network
  1. You connect to the proxy gateway with a host, port, username and password. For ProxyEmpire that is v2.proxyempire.io on port 5000, over HTTP or SOCKS5.
  2. Your settings choose the exit. Country, region, city, carrier and ASN, plus the rotation: a new IP on every request, a sticky session, or timed rotation.
  3. The gateway routes the request through a device connected to that mobile carrier’s network.
  4. The website sees the carrier’s public IP and answers as it would for a phone user in that place. The reply travels back the same way.
Test the connection with curl
# Carrier, country and rotation are chosen in the dashboard's connection builder
curl -x http://USERNAME:PASSWORD@v2.proxyempire.io:5000 https://ipinfo.io/json
# the "org" field should show a mobile carrier, not a hosting company

Why Mobile IPs Are Trusted

Carrier-grade NAT and shared addresses

Mobile carriers do not have enough public IPv4 addresses for every phone, so they use carrier-grade NAT (CGN): many subscribers share one public IPv4 address at the same time, and the address behind a phone changes as it moves between cells and sessions. The IETF describes CGN requirements in RFC 6888 and set aside a shared address space for it in RFC 6598.

Address sharing changes how websites can treat an IP. RFC 6269, which describes the issues with IP address sharing, notes that IP-based penalty boxes stop working and that blacklisting is affected, because blocking one shared address can block every subscriber behind it. In practice, many websites are cautious about blocking mobile IPs, and a mobile IP with some past abuse on it still carries the traffic of many legitimate users.

That is the core advantage: they sit among the most common and least suspicious addresses on the internet. It is also why they cost more per GB than residential or datacenter proxies.

Many teams combine them: residential proxies for most requests, mobile IPs for the sites and apps that need them, datacenter proxies for fast work on permissive targets. Our comparison of residential, mobile and datacenter proxies goes deeper, and rotating residential proxies cover more than 30 million home IPs.

Rotating vs Dedicated Mobile Proxies

Shared pool or a private connection

Rotating mobile proxies

A rotating plan gives you access to a large pool of carrier IPs through one gateway. ProxyEmpire’s pool has more than 4 million mobile IPs. You choose a new IP on every request, a sticky session that keeps one IP, or timed rotation, and target by country, region, city, carrier and ASN at no extra charge. Billing is per GB of traffic, with no limit on concurrent sessions. See rotating mobile proxies.

Dedicated mobile proxies

A dedicated plan gives you exclusive access to one private 4G or 5G connection for a monthly fee, with unlimited bandwidth under the carrier’s fair-use policy. You reset the IP when you choose instead of rotating through a pool. ProxyEmpire offers two packages: a USA 5G package with 50 US locations on Verizon and on-demand IP resets, and a multi-country package with three US locations plus the United Kingdom, Austria and Israel, with IP resets four to five times a day. See dedicated mobile proxies.

4G and 5G Mobile Proxies

What the network generation changes

“4G proxy” and “5G proxy” describe the network generation of the connection behind the IP. Both give you a carrier IP address; the difference websites see is mainly the carrier and location, not the generation. 5G connections can offer more bandwidth and lower latency where coverage is good, but real-world speed through a proxy also depends on signal, network load and the distance between you, the device and the website.

  • ProxyEmpire’s rotating mobile network includes 3G, 4G, 5G and LTE connections from carriers in each country.
  • The dedicated USA package runs on 5G on the Verizon network.
  • LTE is the standard most 4G networks use; “4G LTE” and “4G” are usually the same thing in proxy offers.

Choose by carrier and location first. The network generation matters mostly for bandwidth-heavy tasks.

What Mobile Proxies Are Used For

When a phone’s view is the one that matters
  • Social media management. Social platforms are built for phones. Mobile IPs, one per account through sticky sessions or dedicated connections, suit managing brand accounts. See social media proxies.
  • App testing and QA. Test sign-up flows, regional content, in-app prices and push features through real carrier networks in each market.
  • Ad verification. Check mobile ads, landing pages and app-install campaigns by country, city and carrier. See ad verification proxies.
  • Mobile SEO. Mobile search results differ from desktop results; check them from mobile IPs. See proxies for SEO.
  • Data collection from strict sites. For public data on sites that limit residential or datacenter traffic, mobile IPs are often the most reliable option. See our web scraping hub.
  • Price and availability checks. Some retailers and travel sites show different offers in their apps or mobile sites; mobile IPs show them as local phone users see them.

Key takeaways

  • Carrier IPs are shared by many real users through carrier-grade NAT, which makes them hard to block without collateral damage.
  • Rotating plans give you a large pool with carrier and city targeting, billed per GB.
  • Dedicated plans give you one private 4G or 5G connection, billed monthly.
  • Pick the carrier and location first; the network generation matters mostly for bandwidth.

How to Choose a Mobile Proxy

Six questions
  1. Which countries and carriers do you need? Check that the provider covers them, and whether you can target the carrier.
  2. Do you need many IPs or one stable connection? Rotating for many, dedicated for one.
  3. How will you be billed? Per GB suits bursty data work; monthly with unlimited bandwidth suits constant use.
  4. What rotation control do you get? Per request, sticky sessions, timed rotation and on-demand resets.
  5. Which protocols and authentication? HTTP and SOCKS5 with username and password work with almost every tool.
  6. How good is support? Mobile networks change; fast human support saves projects. ProxyEmpire’s support team is available 24/7 and is made up of real people.

Avoid free mobile proxies. Open proxy lists are shared, unstable and can log or change your traffic; a paid trial costs little and protects your data. ProxyEmpire’s $1.97 trial includes 50 MB of rotating mobile bandwidth and 100 MB of residential.

How to Set Up a Mobile Proxy

Browser, phone or script
  1. In the ProxyEmpire dashboard, open the connection builder and select the Mobile tab.
  2. Choose the country and, under advanced settings, the region, city or carrier.
  3. Choose rotation: same IP, every request, or a custom interval.
  4. Copy the host, port, username and password into your tool.

Limits and Good Practice

Get the most from mobile IPs
  • Use sticky sessions for logins. Changing IP in the middle of a session looks unusual; keep one IP per account or task.
  • Budget bandwidth. Mobile traffic costs more per GB; block images and video in automated browsers, and use residential proxies for the bulk of simple requests.
  • Expect some variation in speed. Carrier networks change with load and signal; build retries into scripts.
  • Follow the rules. Use them for lawful purposes and within each platform’s terms. Banking, payment and government websites are blocked by default on all ProxyEmpire products, and only ports 80 and 443 are open by default.
